Question: How long does it take to complete an Italian succession? What is the whole Italian inheritance process timing?
Answer: If everything goes smoothly, the entire inherance process might take two to three weeks. If the beneficiaries wish to handle the Italian inheritance process remotely, it might take a couple of extra weeks. Extra time is needed if the circumstances require to prepare and validate documents overseas.
Also, if the Italian estate includes one or more Italian bank accounts the overall inheritance process requires in general three to five more weeks, because you would need to acquire some paperwork from the concerned banks. Bank timing to release such documents depends on bank policies and requirements.
In addition to the above, the process of an international succession might take considerably more time. For example, you have an international succession when beneficiaries and/or deceased are not Italian residents whilst the estate is in Italy, or the deceased was an Italian resident with assets and/or beneficiaries overseas. The main reason for the additional time required to complete an international inheritance process is that several peculiarities and additional formalities apply to an international inheritance procedure, compared to a domestic one.
In spite of the above, if you have experience of international successions, you can complete the entire inheritance process within reasonable time.
