Apply for Italian Citizenship in Italy?
Question: I’m having trouble getting an appointment at my home Consulate, is there any other way to apply for my citizenship?
Answer: If you’re planning on applying for citizenship through your home Consulate, there’s another option you can consider that could turn out to be much faster.
Italian citizenship application: either wait 2 years to get an appointment with an Italian Consulate or choose an Italian municipality (Comune) and file your application right away. Bear in mind, that your physical presence in Italy is necessary, this cannot be done remotely.
Also know that not all Italian Comune process Italian citizenship applications in the same way.
In fact, depending on the specific citizenship circumstances, each Comune might have its own policy variations, might ask for different requirements, adopt different timing and handling approach in general.
To make it more “fun”, Comune representatives change over time, and new representatives might apply new policies.
Finally, sometimes it is necessary to coordinate the Comune policies with those of the local Immigration Office (Questura).
Because of these variations, below are best practices in our experience:
- Review the key factors of your specific case circumstances, for example:
– Italian citizenship entitlement profile;
– documents you have, and documents still to be retrieved;
– estimate the time needed to complete the required documents;
– travel plan options (no need to stay in Italy for an extended period of time). - Based on your profile and unique case circumstances, identify the Comune offices which offer the best expectations of smooth processing. For example, if your documents have some particularly complex issues, you might want to identify the Comune offices that are more likely to be flexible and discuss an ad hoc approach;
- Depending on your travel availability, or if you have family immigration needs or other contingencies, select a Comune within the territory of an Immigration Office which adopts policies more favorable to address your specific case;
- Whenever possible, connect beforehand with Comune representatives to review and pre-approve your file, before you travel to Italy to register as a resident and file the citizenship application;
- Establish traveling and filing timeline compatible with your work schedule and in a manner that avoids Italian tax implications.
