Italian permit to stay (permesso di soggiorno)

Question: I got my Italian visa and I am about to go to Italy. How do I get my first Italian Permit to Stay (Permesso di Soggiorno)?

Answer: This is the step-by-step process to get your Italian Permit to Stay (Permesso di Soggiorno):

1. Permit to Stay Application Form (called “Kit”, or “yellow Kit”): Within eight business days after your arrival to Italy go to an Italian post office, called Poste Italiane (which is the national mail service company, equivalent of the USPS in the US) and pick up an application form for the Permit to Stay (Permesso di Soggiorno). The Permesso di Soggiorno application form is called “Kit per la richiesta di Permesso di Soggiorno”. They also call it just “Kit”, as it is a set of forms and documents regarding the Permit to Stay application. Kits are available for free. Almost all post office branches have Kits. Kits are also available at some “Patronato” offices (which are government subsidized organizations managed by Italian labor unions) and the Municipality Halls of some Italian Comune. 2. Fill out the Kit: Complete one Kit with your information as well as the information of any other family member who needs the Permit to Stay (Permesso di Soggiorno) with all pertinent information regarding your visa, passport and stay in Italy.
3. Permit to Stay fee: Pay the Permesso di Soggiorno application fee and Post Office service (currently total EUR 100.46) by means of a payment order. The payment order can be completed at any Post Office. The Kit includes the details to complete the payment order (e.g., memo line, payable to, amount etc. – see also the link provided above as a sample). Also, acquire a Stamp Duty of EUR 16 (at any licensed Tobacco store).
4. File the Application: File the completed Kit and the fee payment receipt it with the competent Poste Italiane office based on the address where you will live. Please bear in mind that you can only file the Kit in person. When filing the Kit you shall show to the Poste Italiane representative your original passport bearing the Italian Visa. Also, bear in mind that you are required to file all the financial resources documents that you had filed with the Italian Consulate when you applied for your Italian visa.
5. Fingerprint Scan: When filing the Kit, the Poste Italiane representative might schedule an appointment for you to go to the competent Police Station to do your fingerprint scan. As an alternative, you might get a notice in the mail directly from the Immigration Office a few days or weeks after filing the Kit with Poste Italiane.
6. Pick up your Permit to Stay: At the fingerprint scan the police office will let you know the expected processing time as well as when and where to go to pick up the Permesso di Soggiorno card as soon as it is ready.

Exceptions might apply depending on your type of visa, local policies, regulation updates, etc.
