Question: What are the requirements to apply for Italian citizenship by marriage?
Answer: The requirements for Italian citizenship through marriage are:
- be married to an Italian citizen for at least two years if living in Italy, or three years if abroad (respectively one year and one and a half years if they have children together);
- know the Italian language; B1 or higher level is required (on a scale from 1 to 6, B1 is #3);
- be married at the time of the application and at least for 36 months after applying;
- file an affidavit declaring that no separation or divorce paperwork has been filed;
- if the couple is not living in Italy, the Italian spouse must register with the competent Italian Consulate as an Italian Citizen Residing Abroad (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero – A.I.R.E.);
- the marriage must be registered with the Italian Municipality (Comune) competent for the Italian spouse;
- have a criminal background check issued by each country where the applicant lived for at least 6 months.
