Question: I have had a house in Italy since 2012 and I always paid IMU tax. I do not live in Italy. What are my Italian tax return duties with respect to the Italian property?
Answer: The Italian Tax Administration this year clarified that a property owner is not subject to Italian income tax (payment and return filing) duty when all the following circumstances apply:
a) IMU was paid for said property;
b) The property does not generate any income (e.g., rental);
c) The property owner does not have other income in Italy.
If all conditions above apply, you are not subject to any Italian Income tax return duty.
