Question: I received a letter from “Studio Legale”. Is it legitimate?
Answer: “Studio Legale” in Italian means “Law Firm”. For example, “Studio Legale Metta” is like saying “Metta Law Firm”.
We receive many requests from foreign individuals asking if the letter they received from “Studio Legale” is legitimate. In most cases it is a scam.
In particular, a person receives a random letter on a letterhead showing “Studio Legale”, an Italian office address, Italian phone number, an email address etc.
The letter is about an alleged Italian debt or inheritance.
The letter urges the user to contact the sender for assistance to get rid of the debt or to claim the inheritance.
For example, we have recently received several messages from people who received letters from a “Barrister Petricca Raffael Esq.”
We did a research and found no evidence that a lawyer exists in Italy with such name. HERE you can see the letter.
Additionally, a letter like this would appear immediately very suspicious to the eyes of an Italian person. In particular, it is not consistent with the standards of a typical letter from a real Italian law firm or real Italian lawyer.
If you receive a similar letter, check if the sender is a legitimate lawyer. To do so, go on the official national directory of Italian lawyers on the Italian Bar Association website HERE
If the letter is legitimate and you need representation in Italy, please do not hesitate to contact us.
